Turnaround in the MeToo trial – “Disadvantage”: Weinstein’s verdict overturned

Date:

Incredible reversal in the MeToo trial: New York’s highest court on Thursday overturned Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction, ruling that the judge in the landmark MeToo trial had disadvantaged the ex-movie mogul with impermissible sentences. However, the producer remains in custody.

The allegations against Harvey Weinstein of sexual violence must therefore be partially renegotiated. According to the appeals court, the judge had prejudiced Weinstein by ‘blatantly wrong decisions’. This includes the decision that women must testify about allegations that were not part of the prosecution.

Remains in custody for further rape
After the trial, Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual assault. Now the case must be heard again. However, the 72-year-old remains in custody. In 2022, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison in Los Angeles for another rape.

The ruling in New York was considered a milestone in the MeToo era that the case sparked. In the fall of 2017, the New York Times and the New Yorker first made public allegations against Weinstein. Around the world, many women and some men subsequently recognized their own stories in those of the alleged Weinstein victims – they began to collect these stories under the keyword ‘MeToo’.
