The US government has promised Ukraine a new aid package worth billions. This is intended to be able to supply weapons in the longer term. As US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced on Friday, another six billion dollars (5.6 billion euros) will be raised.
This is intended to provide, among other things, artillery ammunition, but also drone defense and arming the ‘Patriot’ air defense systems. The White House also plans to award contracts to US defense companies to produce new equipment for the warring country. However, this means that it could take several months to years before the weapons are actually delivered.
“We will not waver,” the US Defense Secretary said on Friday. If Russian President Vladimir Putin wins, “the security implications will be serious and global.” Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had insisted that longer-range missiles and anti-aircraft systems should be delivered.
New aid was only approved on Wednesday
After domestic political disputes, the US Congress only approved new aid at the beginning of this week, the amount of which amounts to 61 billion dollars (the equivalent of 57.03 billion euros). This cleared the way for new arms deliveries.
President Joe Biden immediately announced a new $1 billion military package on Wednesday, immediately after signing the bill passed by Congress. These were mainly anti-aircraft equipment, artillery, missile systems and armored vehicles from the US Army inventory. This means that this equipment will be delivered to Ukraine quickly; some of it is stored at US bases in Europe. The US is considered Ukraine’s main supporter in the war.
