A truce as a deal”? – Discusses “last chance” before attack in Rafah

Date:

According to information from Cairo, there is some movement in the stalled negotiations on the Gaza war. It could be the last chance to prevent an Israeli attack on Rafah.

Significant progress was made in talks between Egyptian and Israeli representatives on Friday, according to state-affiliated TV channel Al-Kahira News. There was no official confirmation. Media reported that Israel sees the recent efforts for a ceasefire and hostage agreement as a “last chance” before the planned attack on the city of Rafah.

The radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas said on Saturday it had received Israel’s response to its latest proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

“Received an official response”
“Hamas today received the official response from the Zionist occupation to the proposal presented to mediators from Qatar and Egypt on April 13,” the organization’s deputy head Khalil Al-Hayya said in a statement. The letter is being investigated and a response will be issued.

According to an insider, Israel is considering a limited ceasefire that would see the release of 33 Hamas hostages, instead of the 40 previously discussed.

“Progress in all areas”
Talks between Egyptian and Israeli representatives in Tel Aviv on Friday were “very good” and focused, a senior Israeli official said. The Egyptians are apparently prepared to put pressure on Hamas to reach an agreement. Progress was made in all areas of the talks.

Egypt was concerned about a possible flow of refugees
“This is the last chance before we go to Rafah,” the Times of Israel quoted the unnamed Israeli government official as saying. “Either an agreement in the near future or Rafah.” Israel wants to destroy the last remaining Hamas battalions in the southern city of Gaza, which borders Egypt. According to Israeli media, Egypt wants to reach an agreement to avert the attack in Rafah. Egypt is concerned that Palestinians could cross the border in large numbers.

Hundreds of thousands have sought refuge in Rafah from the fighting in the rest of the Gaza Strip. The EU and the UN are providing aid there to prevent a famine disaster.
