Last month, Hong Kong recorded its warmest April since weather records began in 1884. According to the China Special Administrative Region Meteorological Administration, the average temperature for the month was 26.4 degrees Celsius.
“Summer has not yet arrived, but April has already been record-breakingly hot,” the authority added.
The residents of the subtropical metropolis have increasingly suffered from extreme heat in recent years, with dozens of heat records having been broken.
On April 27, new daily records for the highest average temperature (28.8 degrees) and the highest minimum (27.7 degrees) were also recorded in Hong Kong, according to the meteorological department. From 1991 to 2020, the average daily temperature in April was between 21.1 and 25.6 degrees.
This year’s record warm April followed an “exceptionally warm” winter from December to February and a March “that was significantly warmer than normal,” the weather bureau said.
Overall, “above average” temperatures are expected for the current year.
