Tragedy in Italy – Five workers died at a sewage treatment plant

Date:

A tragic incident occurred on Monday during maintenance work at a sewage treatment plant on the Italian island of Sicily. Five workers died, probably from inhaling a poisonous gas.

According to the mayor of the municipality of Casteldaccia, Giovanni di Giacinto, a sixth worker was given artificial respiration and taken to a hospital. According to local media reports, workers were doing maintenance work at the factory when some of them began to feel unwell.

Mayor di Giacinto said the workers likely inhaled hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas often released during waste processing. Elevated concentrations of the gas can cause breathing problems, convulsions and death.

Debate on protective regulations
Fatal industrial accidents regularly make the news in Italy and spark a debate about safety regulations. In February, five workers were killed when a concrete structure collapsed at a supermarket construction site in Florence. In April, seven workers were killed in an explosion on the site of a hydroelectric power station near Bologna.
