“Sorry, please”: More than two-thirds of women apologize significantly more often than men. The reason for this is probably very profound. In addition to upbringing, social expectations and a lack of self-confidence and self-esteem play an enormous role.
According to a study by market research institute TQS on behalf of textile company Palmers, 66 percent of the 1,000 Austrians surveyed thought that women apologized significantly more often than men. 89 percent of women agreed that apologizing “is a sign of politeness and decency.” 75 percent would rather apologize too much than too little. 74 percent said “sorry” sometimes slips away.
One in ten women apologized for fear of violence
When asked about the context, it was mainly the circle of friends and acquaintances, followed by professional life, in which apologies were offered most often. Probably the worst part of the study: one in ten women apologized for fear of violence.
Respondents most often observed women apologizing during physical contact (79 percent) and women starting questions with an apology (77 percent). Personal mistakes (72 percent), avoiding conflict (64 percent) and “not enough time for others” (63 percent) were also major reasons for women to ask for forgiveness.
Insight dominates
At the same time, women agree that not every apology is necessary. 76 percent of participants said they had already apologized, even if they didn’t feel it was necessary. So it is not surprising that 69 percent would like to apologize less often.
