Boarding without ID – Milan Airport introduces facial recognition

Date:

Milan Linate Airport is the first in Europe to introduce biometric facial recognition technology for access to security checkpoints and boarding gates. The scans are intended to replace boarding passes and passports and thus save time.

The face boarding service, developed by the French defense and aerospace company Thales, makes it possible to reduce screening times because it eliminates the need to show an ID and boarding pass and everything is done automatically through the biometric recognition system, according to Armando Brunini , general manager of Milan Airports, introduced facial recognition technology. “We will see how the system works in Linate, but we certainly plan to introduce it at Milan Malpensa Airport. We will consider which companies and in what time frame,” Brunini said.

Director: “Safety has been increased”
The airport director emphasized that facial recognition “increases safety”. At the same time, “privacy is respected”. The new system is in principle open to all airlines. So far, ITA Airways and SAS have joined the project.

Together with Milan-Malpensa, Milan Linate Airport is the smaller of the two international airports in the second largest Italian city, Milan. It mainly serves national and European connections, but also business trips.
