There was another protest by climate activists on Wednesday. Police reported on Wednesday that 150 arrests have been made at climate protests in Vienna since January.
Once again there were blockages by climate activists in early morning traffic. The blockade in the area of Triester Strasse was quickly lifted by the Viennese police. The second blockade took place in the area of the southeastern bypass, but caused a lot of traffic disruption and could not be resolved so quickly.
Attached to vehicle
Members of the climate movement positioned a vehicle on one of the lanes of the south-eastern bypass northbound, near the Hansson bend, and then attached themselves to the vehicle with locks and also with glue. With the help of the fire brigade, the vehicle and the climate activists attached to it had to be removed from the road.
As a result, nineteen administrative criminal arrests took place on Wednesday alone as a result of the actions of the climate movement, police said in a press release.
30 protests since 2024
About thirty such disruptions by climate activists have taken place in Vienna since the beginning of the year. About 80 trapped people have been taken off the streets. On average, it takes 45 minutes for the police to end a persistent blockade. Arrests were made 150 times and approximately 270 reports were filed, mostly for violations of municipal law or traffic regulations. Most of these actions led to traffic jams and therefore had to be resolved by the authorities.
“The main goal of this consistent intervention is to keep disruption and disruption to civilian life as low and short as possible. To achieve this, the Vienna Police relies on the fastest possible intervention, proven tactics and constant monitoring of the situation,” the police continued in their letter.
