Due to an unusual odor on board, a Lufthansa passenger plane with almost 340 people on board flew unscheduled back to Frankfurt am Main on Thursday. “The reason for this was an unidentifiable electrical odor in the cabin,” the company said midday. The Boeing 747-8 was en route to Chicago in the US.
According to Lufthansa, there was never any smoke on board. The cause of the odor is still unclear.
Technicians examined the plane, which landed ‘normally’ in Frankfurt. The 320 passengers and 19 crew members left the plane in the usual manner. They would continue their journey in the evening on a replacement plane.
Lufthansa said the plane had been turned around as a precaution. The safety of passengers and crew is our top priority at all times. According to the newspaper ‘Bild’, which quoted passengers, the smell arose 90 minutes after take-off. The plane was already over the Atlantic Ocean at that time.
