A UN report criticizes Austria’s handling of asylum seekers who are victims of torture or psychological suffering. The detention of people with psychological problems in so-called security cells in deportation centers must stop immediately, the UN Committee against Torture demanded in its periodic report on Friday.
Austria must ensure that vulnerable asylum seekers, such as victims of torture, human trafficking and gender-based violence, are given priority in the asylum procedure and receive medical care.
Lack of healthcare
The report raised concerns about poor conditions in detention centers, particularly the lack of healthcare.
Austrian law
The UN experts further criticized the fact that people with psychosocial or mental disabilities can be imprisoned or subjected to compulsory medical treatment under Austrian law. This includes solitary confinement, solitary confinement, physical and chemical restraints in forensic facilities, even for children. The government should urgently review the relevant laws.
The commission suggested that neighboring Liechtenstein review its agreement on the transfer of criminals to the Austrian prison system. To achieve this, there must be fundamental legal guarantees against torture and ill-treatment of prisoners from Liechtenstein.
