Protest in Berlin – The next hunger striker had to go to hospital

Date:

After weeks of hunger strike for more climate protection, another participant in the ‘Hunger until you are honest’ campaign in Germany was hospitalized with serious health problems. The campaign announced Thursday morning that 61-year-old Michael Winter went to the emergency room of a clinic in Munich on Wednesday evening and was admitted as an inpatient.

A spokesperson said Winter is currently not in Berlin like his colleagues, but in Bavaria due to various legal proceedings following climate protests. A few hours earlier, on Wednesday morning, a 35-year-old person on hunger strike in Berlin had already been treated in a clinic, but was released shortly afterwards. The person named ‘Tin’ spoke at a spontaneous demonstration in Berlin in the evening and announced that he wanted to continue the hunger strike.

Under treatment for sodium deficiency
According to the campaign, fellow campaigner Winter is being treated in hospital for a sodium deficiency. Whether he also wanted to continue to starve initially remained unclear. He was already so underweight last week that the volunteer medical team declared they could no longer be responsible for monitoring him.

The aim of the hunger strike is to convince Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to make a government statement on the excessive concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the dangers of climate change. According to a government spokesperson, Scholz does not want to meet the activists’ demands. The protest must continue.

On March 7, activist Wolfgang Metzeler-Kick initially started the hunger strike alone. According to his own statements, he has since stopped eating solid food, only juices, electrolytes and vitamins. Over the next few weeks, four more people were gradually added.
