American biotech company Moderna says it has won a case with the European Patent Office in a dispute with rivals Pfizer and Biontech over its corona vaccine.
The European Patent Office has decided to uphold the validity of Moderna’s patent EP949. It is believed that the rivals would appeal against this. Pfizer and Biontech initially made no comment.
Just one of many patent disputes
This is one of many patent disputes brought by biotech companies. The EU Patent Office revoked a Moderna patent in November 2023.
In the US, Moderna filed a patent lawsuit against Pfizer and Biontech in 2022 over allegations of copying Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine technology. However, the patent case was paused in April. The U.S. Patent Office should investigate the validity of two of the three Moderna patents in question.
