The death of a second Mongolian mountaineer missing from Mount Everest has now been confirmed. Immediately after the body of 53-year-old Usukhjargal Tsedendamba was recovered, his 31-year-old comrade was also found dead on Friday. However, clear identification of the two men took longer, according to travel provider 8k Expeditions, which organized the duo’s climb, it said on Sunday.
The two bodies were discovered near the summit. “We’re trying to get the bodies down,” said Pemba Sherpa of 8k Expeditions. He said the two men traveled without a guide and their radio was found in their tent. Nepal’s tourism authority said on Tuesday that other climbers spotted the two men on Monday morning as they made their way to the summit.
This year there are 419 permits to climb the summit
Hundreds of climbers have already flocked to Nepal, home to eight of the world’s 14 highest mountains, this spring. Nepal has issued more than 900 permits for its mountains this year, including 419 for Everest.
About 80 mountain climbers have already reached the 8,849-meter summit of Everest this year after a rope team secured permanent ropes there last month. The Mongols are the first deaths of this year’s Mount Everest season.
