Last week, a mandatory child protection concept was announced in Vienna for all schools in Austria. According to Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP), this is a response to increasing crime in educational institutions.
According to crime statistics published by the Ministry of the Interior at the request of liberal security spokesman Hannes Amesbauer, the number of incidents has even increased sharply.
The number of crimes in Vienna has doubled
Taking Vienna as an example, the number of crimes in schools almost doubled from 962 to 1,932 between 2021 and 2023. The number of crimes against life and limb increased from 289 to 722. Most crimes at schools are property crimes, with more than 1,000.
Strong increase in all states
Although the figures are highest in Vienna, there has been a noticeable increase in crimes in almost all states. In Lower Austria the number increased from 536 to 881 from 2021 to 2023, in Upper Austria from 497 to 875, in Styria from 456 to 784, in Carinthia from 170 to 332 and in Salzburg from 225 to 326.
