Emergency call on the mountain – mobile phone app led hikers to dangerous areas

Date:

A couple had to be rescued from an extremely dire situation by a police helicopter in Tyrol on Sunday. The hikers had relied on a mobile phone app and found themselves in dangerous terrain near Gnadenwald.

Around 10 a.m. the woman and her husband (both 42) left the sports field in Gnadenwald for a walk along the Walder Joch. They chose an old trail marked on a cell phone app.

No progress after three hours of climbing
What neither of them knew: the path gets lost in the steep terrain. After three hours of climbing, the hikers suddenly found themselves above a huge rocky cliff. There was no path left for miles around.

The couple had no choice but to make an emergency call. Six mountain rescuers went to the lost people and the Libelle police helicopter was called in. The hikers were eventually rescued unharmed with the help of rope.
