In Peru, a freight train collided with a coach. At least four people were killed and another 36 required hospital treatment, the South American country’s transport ministry announced on Sunday. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
The passenger bus drove from the capital Lima to Huancayo, about 300 kilometers to the east. According to the Ministry of Transport, the accident occurred at 4 a.m. (local time) in the La Oroya district, about halfway along the route. The collision killed at least four people and injured 36 others.
There were warning signs
Highway police commander Justo Venero told radio station RPP that there are signs along the route of the accident indicating that trains are crossing the road. Venero also said the engineer told authorities that the freight train’s “audible and visual signals” were on at the time of the collision.
The question of guilt has still not been resolved
Peruvian media reported, citing police, that the bus driver may be responsible for the accident. He apparently tried to cross the tracks right in front of the train. The specific cause of the accident is currently being determined by authorities.
