Wild street fighting took place in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk this weekend between members of the Wagner mercenary company and a group of men described by eyewitnesses as criminals. There was also shooting. There were several injured.
The police have opened a criminal case, the Russian television channel RTVI reported on Monday. According to media reports, the incident was caused by a dispute between men over a woman.
Wagner mercenaries were driven off with gunfire
Videos on social media (see below) show two groups engaging in a street fight. First, one party, reportedly former Wagner mercenaries, beat their opponents with batons, among other things. Then masked people dressed in black arrive and fire shots from pistols. The guns are likely non-lethal weapons. Still, several people were injured.
The Wagner unit, now integrated into the Russian army, came into public attention especially in the first year of the war against Ukraine. She was involved, among other things, in the bloody battles for the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, which was completely destroyed during the fighting.
The late Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin also hired serious criminals for the armed forces, who were guaranteed release upon completion of their mission due to their participation in Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. Since then, there have been repeated reports of crimes committed by Wagner mercenaries in Russia after returning from Ukraine.
