A Belgian holiday couple had to be rescued by helicopter in Sportgastein today, Monday. The two were on the “Bockhartseerunde”. They wanted to avoid a snow field, but then could no longer move forward or backward.
The couple from Belgium (40 and 42 years old) had gone out for a walk in Sportgastein in the morning. They wanted to walk the so-called “Bockhartsee circuit” there. On the way back along the “Zimburgweg” in steep terrain, they encountered other hikers. They asked about the route and its accessibility. The couple continued their walk.
There were several snow fields above the Miesbichlscharte, which caused the two people to veer off the path and into steep terrain. Due to the very steep terrain, the soft snow and the risk of falling, they decided to make an emergency call.
During the search flight with the helicopter “Libelle”, the aviation police were able to locate and subsequently rescue the two Belgians. The hikers were unharmed. They were equipped with mountain boots and backpacks.
