krone.tv on site – settlement flooded – now swimming prohibited in the Danube

Date:

The Danube level around Klosterneuburg and Kritzendorf is currently being closely monitored; On Tuesday afternoon the water level was just below 6.2 meters. A growth of ten to twenty centimeters is expected in the coming hours, after which the peak level should be reached, explains Franz Resperger of the State Fire Command of Lower Austria.

The roller ferry road and parts of the floodplain in Kritzendorf, just before Klosterneuburg, are flooded and vehicles can no longer enter and leave the area. The situation is currently being continuously monitored and the Klosterneuburg volunteer fire brigade has already taken the first safety measures.

Viennese are not allowed to enter the water for weeks
The auxiliary canal in Langenzersdorf, through which enormous amounts of Danube water flow, has been open for two days. This means a lot of relief for Klosterneuburg and Kritzendorf. For the Viennese, however, this means a swimming ban in the coming weeks.

The Danube Island will be canceled at short notice. The measure applies for hygienic reasons. How long the swimming ban remains in force usually depends on the sample results from the hygiene laboratories.

“Nothing can be contained here”
In the krone.tv interview, Resperger also explains why the situation arose due to the amount of water from Germany. Because it is a ‘misconception’ that the water from Germany to Austria can be dammed using power stations.

Resperger: “These are run-of-river power stations, not dam-based power stations as we know them from Kaprun or in Ottenstein in Lower Austria. Nothing can be contained here. Once a certain amount of water is reached, the dam fields must be opened, otherwise the damage to the power plants would be too great. In that respect, you should not give in to the false hope that you can achieve great things with it.”
