Compared to most other countries in the world, Austria is a safe haven. In the Global Peace Index of the twenty most peaceful countries in the world, we rank very high next to countries such as Iceland and Denmark. Despite this fact, many people’s subjective sense of security says otherwise. This also has to do with the current news situation. How safe do you feel?
Austria still has a fairly low crime rate. However, the news of knife attacks, deaths caused by firearms or roaming youth gangs leaves very few people unmoved. Attacks by strangers on the street are the exception rather than the rule: most acts of violence against women take place by male people in their immediate environment. In addition, the distribution of news has also changed, not least through online media. All of this can have a negative effect on your personal sense of security. If you can no longer go through the park or shop without discomfort, measures are necessary.
How would you describe your overall sense of security in this country? Have you had any personal experiences that have had a negative impact on this? In which places do you feel particularly safe or unsafe? How do media reports about crime influence you? And last but not least: what suggestions do you have to improve the situation? We look forward to your contributions!
