After more than two years of war, support for President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ukraine has fallen to a historic low. But he still has the confidence of more than half the population.
According to a survey published on Friday, the head of state’s approval fell below 60 percent for the first time. In May 2022 – shortly after the start of the Russian war of aggression – that number was still 90 percent.
However, as the war progressed, Zelensky’s popularity steadily declined. In December 2023, 77 percent of Ukrainians still trusted him, and in February this year, 64 percent still trusted him.
“Downward trend continues”
Now this value has fallen below 60 percent for the first time, research institute KIIS reported on Friday. “The downward trend in confidence continues,” the institute writes. “At the same time, we would like to point out that Volodymyr Zelensky still has legitimacy in the eyes of Ukrainian society and that the majority of Ukrainians trust him.”
In office since 2019
Zelenskyj took office in 2019. His term effectively ended last month, but he remained president under the current martial law. According to the Ukrainian authorities, there will be no elections for the time being, partly because 20 percent of the country is under Russian control and millions of Ukrainians have fled abroad.
