The clouds in the Carinthian sky looked threatening on Friday afternoon. In addition to heavy rain showers, there was also occasional light hail. Water rescuers helped two Carinthians out of a difficult situation at Lake Faaker See!
After sunny and summery Friday morning, forecast afternoon thunderstorms and showers hit our state. The sudden heavy rain and hail in Villach and, among others, in the Lavant Valley worried some Carinthians, and there were warnings of severe weather in the districts of Klagenfurt-Land and Villach-Land. According to the UWZ, the thunder cell will probably pass quickly.
Two people saved
However, things became serious at Lake Faaker See: the wind increased around 3 p.m. and the weather quickly deteriorated. “An emergency team from the Faaker See operations center proactively started a check trip with the boat,” said a water rescue service. On the north side of the lake – in the urban area of Villach – the two water rescuers could see two people in an inflatable canoe struggling with the strong winds and dangerous conditions – in distress. “Heavy rain, high waves and small hail worsened the situation,” emergency services said. The experienced rescue team was able to quickly get the two, including their boat and SUP, aboard the rescue motorboat and take them back to the safety of shore. No other people seeking help could be identified.
The water rescue service calls for: “Always keep a close eye on the weather and remember that weather conditions can often occur very quickly!” In case of emergency, you should call 130 for help and, if possible, go to the nearest bank and wait. “If storms threaten at the lake, always pay attention to the orange storm warning lights!” said the water rescuers.
