Due to Monday’s huge rock fall, the B33 near Aggsbach-Dorf in the Melk district (Lower Austria) is closed. Restaurant owners on the right bank of the Danube in the Wachau are already feeling the aftershocks of the disaster – despite summer temperatures and deliciously fresh chanterelles.
“If things continue like this, we will have enormous problems!”, say Philipp and Marie-Thérès Essl from the inn of the same name in Reifesdorf in the Krems district. As reported, the Aggsteiner Straße (B33) in the Aggsbach-Dorf area of the Melk district has been closed since Monday afternoon after a violent mudslide. Fortunately, no one was injured other than a cyclist. It cannot yet be estimated how long the ban will apply.
Uncertain summer season for gastronomy
A slap in the face for the numerous restaurateurs on the right bank of the Danube in the Wachau. “Something has to be done quickly now – especially at the start of the season, the main access road to the region is blocked,” complains landlord spokesperson Mario Pulker.
The Essls felt the effects of the roadblock shortly after the accident. Last Thursday the inn in Wachau even had to close due to a lack of reservations.
Other restaurants also show their empty gardens on social media. Despite the summer temperatures, guests have been staying away since the landslide. “We urgently need a tourism-friendly solution!” was the gist.
Fast help for companies
With a view to the surrounding businesses, state governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner promised rapid assistance. “This road is an important arterial road,” the state leader said. They want to quickly develop solutions specifically for cycling tourism, especially because the south bank is visited by around 12,000 cycling tourists per month in the high season.
Even this week’s heavy rain did not help the situation in the Wachau and claimed countless Florianis.
