Arm stuck – man stuck in milling machine for hours

Date:

A serious industrial accident took place on the premises of packaging giant ALPA in Hard (Vorarlberg) on Monday evening. A 24-year-old man got his arm stuck in a CNC milling machine and was seriously injured. He endured painful hours.

The accident happened around 7:50 p.m. The 24-year-old was working on a CNC milling machine when his right arm suddenly became trapped under intense pressure – it was impossible for him to free himself. Loud screams alerted colleagues to his plight. They immediately pressed the emergency stop button and provided first aid. In addition, the rescue service, the emergency doctor and the fire brigade were alerted.

The problem: the machine wouldn’t let go of the man’s arm. Only after two and a half hours and under the most extreme conditions – the man was in enormous pain – were the Floriani disciples able to expose the arm. The seriously injured man subsequently received medical care on site and was then taken to Feldkirch State Hospital by the Christophorus 8 rescue helicopter.

Was the machine defective?
There is a lot of guesswork about the cause of the accident – because such a scenario should never have happened. The milling machine is now being examined for any malfunctions. In addition, due to the severity of the accident, officials from the labor inspectorate were called in; they will closely investigate the incident, together with ALPA safety officials.
