Those sheep that were found dead in the Tyrolean Karwendel in the municipality of Scharnitz at the end of May were mauled by a bear. This is apparent from a DNA analysis, the state of Tyrol reported on Friday. In East Tyrol, on the other hand, a wolf and a golden jackal were found.
The 15 shredded sheep were discovered at the end of May on an alpine meadow in the Karwendel. Another 20 sheep were considered missing at the time. The suspicion was already clear then, but now it is clear: “The results of the DNA analysis confirm that a bear is responsible for the cracks,” the country said in a broadcast.
The bear had been captured several times beforehand by a wildlife camera. The experts at the time said there was no immediate danger to humans.
Wolf and golden jackal in East Tyrol
A wolf and a golden jackal have also been genetically detected in East Tyrol, based on a wild animal and a farm animal reported to authorities at the end of May. “A wolf from the Italian population is responsible for a deer kill in the municipality of Kartitsch. However, no predator DNA was found on a sheep that was found dead shortly afterwards in Untertilliach. The DNA of a golden jackal provided the genetic analysis of a smear from a dead sheep found in the municipality of Matrei in Osttirol,” the state said.
