More than 80 people were killed in a particularly tragic boat accident in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The boat sank early in the morning on the Kwa River in Mai-Ndombe province, the presidential office announced with great dismay on Platform X on Wednesday. President Felix Tshisekedi has called for an investigation into the cause of the accident. It initially remained unclear how many passengers were on the boat at the time of the accident.
The aim is to prevent “such a catastrophe from happening again in the future,” the presidential office said. Due to poor road conditions, people in the East African country of 90 million people often use the waterway to get around. Many boats are built of simple wood and poorly maintained. The boats are often overloaded.
