Tragedy near Graz – landslide: second child “out of danger”

Date:

Horrible scenes took place on Wednesday evening in Siegensdorfberg in the Graz district: as reported, a five-year-old child was killed in a landslide. The second child, who was also buried by the earth’s mass, is “out of danger” according to the doctors treating him.

The shock of the tragedy that occurred on Wednesday evening in the municipality of St. Marein near Graz, east of the Styrian capital, is deep among all involved.

Guest child died
As reported, a woman was walking in a forest with her two children and two ‘visitor children’ when suddenly about 1,000 cubic meters of soil became loose. A five-year-old boy – one of the ‘visitor children’ – was buried by the mass of the earth. Despite rescue measures that were immediately deployed and all emergency services pushed to their limits, the child could only be saved dead.

Another child was also buried, but was rescued in time. It was taken to Graz University Hospital by rescue helicopter.

Spokeswoman Simone Pfandl-Pichler expressed complete confidence on Friday morning in response to a ‘Krone’ request: “The affected child is being operated on by a pediatrician, he has minor injuries, there is no danger to his life.”

Extensive barrier
Sabri Yorgun of the Styrian State Police was one of the first to arrive at the scene of the accident. “Geologists are on site, the area will remain cordoned off for the time being,” he said.

In an initial statement, the mayor was equally deeply affected: “The people in the community are incredibly sad, the events have gone through everyone’s hearts and souls,” said Franz Knauhs, local boss of St. Marein near Graz.

“The family has been in the community for a long time; the boys and their children only recently moved back into the community to their parents’ home.”
