For ten years, the US and Ukraine sign a security agreement

Date:

The US and Ukrainian governments have signed a ten-year security agreement. Ukraine is promised further military support, among other things. The two countries also want to cooperate in the defense industry.

Information from the secret service must also be exchanged. US President Joe Biden and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky wanted to sign the agreement on Thursday evening at the G7 summit in southern Italy. For example, the agreement regulates military equipment, training and maneuvers, but does not promise specific weapon systems.

There should be no security guarantees for the country at war, nor should American forces be used for defense. The US government wants to help the partner country become a NATO member and at the same time calls on the country to implement various reforms – for example in the areas of the judiciary, law enforcement and the fight against corruption.

The American government under Biden sees the agreement, among other things, as a message to the Russian government. Both sides have been negotiating the bilateral security treaty for some time. Zelensky had hoped to reach the strongest agreement of all with the United States.

Similar agreements with other states
The Ukrainian government had previously signed similar agreements with a dozen countries, including Germany and Japan. The agreements promise financial and military assistance for ten years, but do not provide security guarantees under any circumstances. The background to this is a commitment by the G7 last year to better protect Ukraine in the long term.

At the current G7 summit in southern Italy, a huge aid package for Ukraine was put together. The US government agreed to provide up to $50 billion (the equivalent of about €46 billion) for the planned loan.
