A reckless speeder caused a dangerous accident on the Danube embankment highway in Vienna on Thursday evening: the 22-year-old Syrian went on a wild chase with the police and collided with the emergency car. A police officer was flown to hospital by helicopter.
Around 8:30 p.m., a civilian patrol on the A22 became aware of the driver of the car who was driving at a speed of 158 km/h in the 80 km/h zone. The police officers asked the man to stop using a stop sign, after which the speeding offender initially slowed down. But then the 22-year-old suddenly stepped on the gas again and sped away.
Police car crashed into road divider
The police gave chase on the highway. Suddenly, the speeder turned his car to the right and crashed into the police car. The emergency vehicle was thrown against the road divider and came to a stop there. The 22-year-old’s car was so badly damaged that further escape was impossible.
Both police officers were injured in the collision. One of the officers was flown to hospital by rescue helicopter. He suffered injuries to his pelvis and upper body, according to Andreas Huber, spokesman for the Vienna Professional Rescue Service. The second police officer and the 22-year-old were also taken to hospital with injuries.
Fines of 1,135 euros not paid
The Syrian was temporarily arrested and his interrogation is still ongoing. He is being reported for various criminal and administrative violations. It was also discovered that the man had not yet paid past administrative fines amounting to 1,135 euros.
Both police officers were unable to continue their duties.
