Because of the European Championship, the German police are currently carrying out extensive checks at the borders, including with Austria (see video above). So far, 1,400 attempts at unauthorized access have been detected, said Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD).
In addition, 900 people were denied entry to the country between June 7 and 13. Travelers from the Schengen area can currently also be checked at airports and ports. “During the temporary checks I ordered at all German borders, the Federal Police executed 173 arrest warrants within a week (…). This shows that our measures are working. “Above all, we want to identify and stop violent criminals at an early stage,” Faeser said in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”.
Politically motivated crime
Some of the crimes were politically motivated and police were also able to arrest smugglers. The European Football Championship started on Friday and since then there have been 22,000 police officers in Germany every day. This is “the largest operation in the history of the federal police.”
The extensive checks are planned until July 19, and the football championship itself lasts until July 14. Germany’s neighboring countries are Austria, the Benelux countries, Poland, France, Switzerland, Denmark and the Czech Republic.
