They are always where tragedies have occurred. Where people were murdered, committed suicide – or died a lonely death. Three crime scene cleaners talk about their worst missions.
Peter Holzer is a man with a wiry build and you can see from his hands that he is good at gripping things. He has a melancholic quality around his mouth. What stands out about him are his bright eyes. They’ve seen a lot of bad things in the last two years…
The trained chef has been working as a crime scene cleaner for the Viennese company Zelenka since the beginning of 2016. His job: he cleans. Where terrible things happened. When people were murdered, committed suicide or died a lonely death.
Holzer’s memories of his first assignment: “It was in an apartment in Vienna. A young man had murdered his father. And I made a serious rookie mistake before cleaning up. I looked at the family photos hanging on the wall. And then there was a terrible movie in my head. The crime happened before my eyes, the scene where the son stabbed his father. A colleague, realizing what was happening to me, brought me back to reality: ‘Don’t think about the tragedy, otherwise you will go crazy. Just do your work and think of something fun.’”
