This has never happened before in Austria: a bus stop is being built directly on the southern motorway near Gleisdorf! From 2027, express buses will stop here and barriers and closed waiting areas will ensure safety.
The plans have been ready for some time and now the project has been completed: Austria’s first bus stop is to be built between the southern motorway junctions Gleisdorf-Süd and Gleisdorf-West at the end of 2026. Because the A2 route is already being renovated, construction work is an option.
From the beginning of 2027, express buses that already run on the highway will stop at the stop. Only these buses – equipped with the correct technology – can open the barriers up to the stop, which are intended to guarantee the necessary safety. There is a closed waiting area with sanitary facilities for passengers.
Traffic on the A2 must decrease
But how do passengers get to and from the stop? Well, on the one hand, it is close to the train station, other buses stop in the area, there will be a connection to the underlying road network and a pedestrian and cycle path is being constructed by the municipality.
“It is also very nice that we will also reduce traffic on the A2 (according to model calculations, memorandum) by about two percent and that the project will therefore make an important contribution to even more climate protection,” says traffic officer and deputy governor Anton Lung. From 2027, passenger development will be evaluated annually. If the new offer is well received, the plan is to expand it to other bus lines and also to private providers such as Flixbus.
