After racism scandal – slogans on Sylt: those involved may remain at the university

Date:

Following the publication of a video from the North Sea island of Sylt in which partygoers shouted racist slogans to the song “L’amour Toujours” by Gigi D’Agostino, there was great outrage. The university of one of those involved investigated whether this should be ruled out. Result: She is allowed to continue her studies, but is excluded from the educational institution until the end of July.

The recording quickly spread on social media. The young guests sang ‘Foreigners out’ and ‘Germany for the Germans’ in a bar. The operator then distanced himself – the university of one of those involved also took action and forbade the student to enter the building.

The exmatriculation committee of the University of Applied Sciences (HAW) Hamburg investigated the case and, according to German media, came to the conclusion: “There will be no exmatriculation procedure against the student of HAW Hamburg who took part in the racist chants during a celebration on Sylt.”

University explains: Exclusion would represent a serious infringement of fundamental rights
The statement continued, proportionality was weighed. Exclusion is ultimately a serious violation of fundamental rights, it was explained. The stay-at-home order and the individual study situation were also taken into account. After careful consideration, it was unanimously decided against the deregistration procedure.

The institution also announced that the HAW had distanced itself from the video made at Pentecost and the content expressed in it. “As a cosmopolitan university, we oppose racism in all forms and make our decisions based on our responsibility to maintain and demand open, respectful collaboration.”
