A child on holiday in Croatia was killed in a tragic incident: the father of a nine-year-old child apparently allowed him to take an explosive device – probably a hand grenade – with him. An explosion occurred in the family’s car and the boy died.
The child from the Czech Republic was on holiday with his family. The father is said to have entered the marked danger area of a military training area near the town of Knin with the boy. The dangerous souvenir is said to have been taken during this trip. “In the reckless belief that this would not have any unwanted and life-threatening consequences,” the Croatian authorities said.
The vehicle later had to stop in the city of Bilisane due to a breakdown. While he tried to remove the dangerous object from the car, the explosive was activated.
As the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in Prague, the father of the approximately nine-year-old child was arrested. Croatian police announced on Friday that the 46-year-old was charged, among other things, with committing a serious crime against public security.
Has the legacy of the Yugoslav war exploded?
Two women aged 49 and 34 were also injured in the explosion. They were taken to hospital. The father of one of the injured women told the Czech TV channel Nova a different version of events: during the unwanted stop in Bilisane, the boy discovered an object in the bushes that exploded when he brought it back to the car. Accordingly, it could be a legacy from the Yugoslav Wars.
