Three missing persons – German (67) died during a walk in Crete

The German started on Sunday morning in the village of Omalos in the regional district of Chania. According to the Greek news channel ERT, the destination was the fishing village of Sougia, more than thirty kilometers away. The tourist is said to have called his wife and told her that he was not feeling well. The rescuers asked the hiker to call 911 so they could locate his cell phone. However, he was only found dead on Monday morning in a rocky, difficult to access ravine. The authorities assume that the pensioner had lost his way.

Sixth death in June
This is the sixth death among hikers in the heat in Greece in the month of June alone (see video above). Another three people have been missing for over a week. “We are searching with thermal imaging cameras, dogs and drones, but I am losing hope,” said the mayor of Crete. The deceased and missing persons are all foreigners between the ages of 55 and 80. At the beginning of June, British presenter and television doctor Michael Mosley (67) died on the island of Symi.

Afternoon heat underestimated
Greek doctors said tourists underestimated the impact of the high temperatures. For example, heat stroke can cause confusion and disorientation, causing hikers to stray from the path. Other dangerous factors, especially in old age, include dehydration and heart and circulatory problems.

Greeks stayed in cool, closed houses even during the strong midday heat. Temperatures in June were sometimes above 40 degrees Celsius.
