The mayor of Graz wants to make the Graz Volksgarten, a notorious crime hotspot, safer, but rejects the reintroduction of a protection zone. This is exactly the measure that the residents and the Graz ÖVP are now emphatically demanding: it is the most effective means of combating excesses of violence.
For many people in Graz, the Volksgarten is not exactly an oasis of peace where they prefer to let their children play. Neighbors prefer to avoid the green surroundings in the Lend district than to rest on one of the benches. At times, blatant drug deals, violent crimes and insults have been on the agenda for years and have turned the park, which was created in 1875, into a fear zone. A month ago, KPÖ mayor Elke Kahr gave the green light for the implementation of measures to get the Volksgarten problem under control. On the one hand, a two-man law enforcement patrol now patrols, and on the other hand, the area will be structurally redesigned.
