During a summer camp in Sicily, a ten-year-old student fell into a pit fifteen meters deep. A 54-year-old teacher tried to climb to the boy, but was unable to reach the victim. The fire brigade could only save the child dead; the woman suffered shock and bruising.
The tragedy occurred on Thursday in Palazzolo Acreide. Little Vincenzo L. had strayed from the group and climbed onto the lid of a well. Despite warnings from the supervisors, he jumped around on the hatch – this caused a bolt on the door to break off and the boy fell into the depths in front of teachers and other children.
The teacher could not reach the boys
According to TV channel RAI News, the well was about half full of water. A teacher then tried to get the boy out by climbing the shaft. She stopped after climbing the first stone steps, as ‘Corriere della Sera’ reported. She may have slipped or panicked. She also eventually had to be removed from the well by the emergency services.
Vincento probably drowned
As the emergency services announced after an initial reconstruction of the facts, a rescue by the teacher was unlikely in any case. Vincento lost consciousness immediately after the fall and probably drowned in the well.
The parents, who were aware of the incident, waited for hours by the well, hoping that their son was still alive. But the fire brigade divers could only bring him to the surface dead.
The Syracuse District Attorney’s Office has launched an investigation into the tragedy. The scene of the accident has been cordoned off and the police investigation will continue in the coming days, authorities said.
