Joe Biden’s erratic performance in the first televised debate against Donald Trump has caused outrage among Democrats. A search for a replacement is already underway behind closed doors. But is it even possible to take Biden out of the race?
At the end of August, the Democrats will meet for a coronation party convention in Chicago. Actually, to officially nominate Biden as their presidential candidate. But the party is in shock. In Chicago, the party could change course in the short term and choose a new candidate. However, this causes many problems, because the rules do not actually allow this.
Replacing Biden without his consent would amount to a coup. The party would thus ignore the results of democratic elections. The 81-year-old won almost 99 percent of delegates in his party’s primaries.
Withdrawal is probably only possible voluntarily
The US president would therefore have to leave of his own free will. Biden could, for example, cite health or family reasons to withdraw in order to save face. The question is whether he would be willing to do so.
Because the American president has already broken his promise to serve just one term as a bridge builder to the next generation.
Replacement when vacant
The party statute states that the candidate can be replaced in the event of a vacancy. Unlike many Republican delegates, Democratic delegates at the party’s summit are not technically tied to their candidate. The party’s rules allow delegates to “represent, to the best of their knowledge and belief, the views of those who elected them,” which provides some leeway.
“Just sad,” the New York Post headline said about Biden’s failed performance:
However, this measure is intended in the event of death, resignation or inability to participate. But not to replace people who do not want to resign.
Plan B is completely missing
The party has no real plan B. The Democrats have failed to build a successor. Biden should be blamed for this. The grandfather of seven claims that he is the most qualified person for the job and that only he can beat Trump. This now seems almost presumptuous.
The natural successor would have been Vice President Kamala Harris. But she has remained pale in her office, barely visible and struggling with poor approval ratings herself. Biden was accused of putting unpopular issues like immigration on the table for his deputy. And now it’s too late.
Trump now has good cards
Even if Biden’s exit option were theoretically conceivable, it would likely be politically hopeless. It hardly seems possible to establish another Democrat on the national stage as an alternative to the presidency within four months, who is as well-known as Trump. Trump’s chances of returning to the White House have increased significantly following Biden’s disaster in Atlanta.
