Due to excessive germs, a temporary swimming ban was announced at Lake Constance at the Bregenz campsite. The cause is probably a sewage treatment plant.
Vorarlberg authorities have imposed a temporary swimming ban on part of the shores of Lake Constance. The reason is a high level of germ contamination, which the state environmental institute discovered during a routine sampling of the EU swimming area “Seecamping Bregenz”. The cause was said to be probably a loose lid on an inspection shaft in the wastewater pipe of the Bregenz sewage treatment plant.
The line is currently under water
Because part of the pipeline that discharges the treated wastewater into the depths is currently under water due to the current high level of the lake, the leak in the shaft near the coast was not immediately noticed. The city of Bregenz is trying to find a quick solution. During the investigation, greatly increased levels of the indicator germ Escherichia coli were found in the affected bathing area.
Results expected on Saturday
As a result, samples were also taken in nearby bathing areas, and results are expected on Saturday, the country said. As soon as normal values are available again, the applicable swimming ban from Bilgeriloch east to the Bregenz marina will be lifted.
Due to heavy rainfall and high inflow into Lake Constance, some of the untreated wastewater has been discharged into the lake in recent weeks. According to current measurements, the other EU bathing areas on Lake Constance had good to excellent values, it was said.
