Yesterday, Monday, July 1, more and more calls from telephone scammers were reported to the Salzburg police – with a modified form of the police trick.
The scam is already known as bail fraud: a caller pretends to be a police officer and tells of an accident involving a close relative, even resulting in injuries – only a bail can prevent the relative from going to jail. The money would then be collected by the caller himself or an accomplice.
Police warns: “Real police don’t call!”
To raise awareness of such calls, the state police explain:
- Elderly are the target
- The callers pose as police officers and ask for money, possessions and gold
- The real police do not call you and demand money, ask for your belongings or want to secure your belongings
How to Protect Yourself from “Fake Police Officers”
- Be careful with unknown callers!
- Ask yourself: could the story be true? Talk to family members or friends immediately.
- Don’t reveal any details about your assets!
- Don’t let yourself be pressured: hang up!
- Don’t let strangers into your apartment!
- Never give money or gold to strangers!
- Demand ID from alleged police officers!
- Call the emergency number 133 and ask if this police officer really exists!
- Take warnings from bank employees seriously
