A defective dryer is believed to have caused a fire in an apartment building in Eichkögl (southeast Styria) on Sunday night. The noise of the fire woke up the sleeping resident, who was able to escape outside in time with her three children.
At around 10:45 p.m., a fire broke out on the top floor of the single-family home in the Ebersdorf district. The 53-year-old resident was sleeping on the couch when loud noises from the adjoining room suddenly woke her up.
Tumble dryer on fire
The Styrian woman opened the bedroom door and saw heavy smoke and fire near the dryer. The 53-year-old tried to remove it, but it was too late. She fled outside with her three children and alerted the emergency services.
Dramatic use
The operation of the six fire brigades (Eichkögl, Fladnitz, Kirchberg ad Raab, St. Margarethen ad Raab and Takern II supported by the FF Feldbach turntable ladder) continued until the early hours of the morning. In order to successfully combat the fire, the fire brigade had to open the roof. “The greatest danger was from falling parts”, says the commander of the FF Eichkögl, Christian Donnerer.
Fortunately, no one was injured, but there was considerable damage to the family home. The upper floor is probably completely burned out. Further investigation into the origin of the fire is being conducted by local police.
