This time, activists of the latest generation in Berlin have come up with something new. On Monday, they lined up in front of the official residence of the German Federal President and set fire to their school reports. A little later, they ‘died’ as a result of climate change.
On the short message platform X (formerly Twitter), the climate activists declared: “Our future is burning before our eyes. The burning documents illustrate opportunities, hopes and dreams that are going up in flames due to the government’s failure of climate policy.” Niklas, 17, who graduated with honors from high school, said of the protest: “This certificate represents opportunities that are available to me, our government has blocked it. In school we learned how dramatic the climate crisis is and how urgently comprehensive change is needed now. But politicians keep lying to us that they have everything under control and that we don’t have to worry.”
Police break up an unannounced meeting
After setting fire to the certificates – only four were completely burned by the strong wind – the youths lay down on the lawn in front of Bellevue Palace and explained the deadly consequences of climate change. Since the protest was not registered, the police were deployed and made short work of it. After 15 minutes the rally was over.
Incidentally, according to a report by bild.de, the certificates were mainly copies. There were only a few originals and the students would also have had certified copies made in time.
