Jobs in crisis – Loud cry for help from Austrian kindergartens

Date:

For years, the conditions for staff in Austrian kindergartens have become increasingly demanding; there is a great shortage of skilled workers. But how do you get people into the profession and, above all, how do you keep them? Because there has been a lack of appreciation and financial incentives for a long time.

Overcrowded, understaffed classes, little visibility and appreciation for the primary school teacher long known as the ‘preschool aunt’, more and more children with challenging needs – it seems as if the problems in caring for our little ones have existed for decades without much change. Insiders and experts speak of a chronic crisis in which primary education finds itself.
