The alcoholic was already spotted late Monday evening in the Pfändetunnel. She was travelling in winding lines towards Tyrol. When another driver warned her by flashing her headlights, the drunk driver accelerated. But the fast journey must not last too long.
Shortly after the tunnel, the 53-year-old came to the exit to Bregenz and then crashed into the guardrail without braking. The force of the impact lifted the vehicle up, causing it to hang on one of the guardrails.
First responders freed the injured driver from her vehicle, which had been involuntarily jacked up and badly damaged. The woman was later treated by the rescue team and taken to the state hospital in Bregenz.
The vehicle was a total loss. During the recovery and clean-up work, the Pfändetunnel in the direction of Tyrol was closed for about 40 minutes. The alcohol test on the driver was positive.
