Concerns about Israel – Blinken: Death toll remains ‘unacceptably high’

Date:

The US administration on Tuesday reiterated its concerns about the Israeli conduct of the war in the Gaza Strip. The number of civilian deaths remains “unacceptably high”, according to the spokesman for US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. He was “concerned” and had also communicated this to Israeli representatives.

“In our view, far too many civilians are still being killed in this conflict,” spokesman Matthew Miller said Tuesday. More than 90 people were killed Saturday in Israeli airstrikes on a camp near the town of Khan Younis. Journalists reported that the bodies of children were pulled from the rubble. The Israeli military said the strike targeted two senior Hamas leaders and “masterminds” of the Oct. 7 attack.

Hamas leader really dead?
However, the White House said the Israeli military does not yet know whether Deif was actually killed in the attack. The United States has supported Israel militarily and diplomatically since the beginning of the war. It also brokers indirect ceasefire negotiations with Hamas.

On Tuesday, Blinken also called for a diplomatic solution to the conflict with Lebanon’s Hezbollah militia (see video above). That army and Israel’s military have been fighting on the border almost daily since the Gaza war began, and there have been casualties on both sides. Some 150,000 people have now left the area.

The Israeli government wants Hezbollah to withdraw behind the Litani River, 30 kilometers from the border, as stipulated in a UN resolution. The Iranian-backed militia will only stop shelling once a ceasefire is in place in the Gaza Strip.

Shelling from Lebanon
On Tuesday evening, the Israeli army said it had repelled more shelling from Lebanon. Most of the bullets were intercepted and there were no injuries. The forces earlier attacked a Hezbollah arms depot in southern Lebanon. There had long been fears that the conflict would spread.
