On Tuesday, a foreign tourist was attacked by a bear while walking in the town of Dro in Trentino, northern Italy. The man called for help and was eventually taken to Trento hospital with injuries to his hands and legs.
Rangers are now busy identifying the bear that could be responsible for the attack.
In April 2023, a bear fatally injured a 26-year-old jogger in Caldes, Trentino.
More than 100 bears in Trentino
Trentino recently approved a bill aimed at stopping the spread of the bear population. It provides for the possibility of killing up to eight animals per year. The latest estimate puts their number at over 100.
According to the draft, it is the responsibility of the governor of Trentino, Maurizio Fugatti, to order the killing of problematic specimens. The request requires a positive opinion from the Council of State.
