The damage is enormous: there is a risk of a permanent financial collapse after storms

Date:

Last week’s storm night was reported in Frantschach-St. Gertraud, Wolfsberg and Preitenegg (Carinthia) will be remembered. Not only for the affected residents, but also for the communities themselves. The damage means that the already cramped communities are reaching their limits.

“The damage for us is enormous and is estimated at several million euros,” says mayor Günther Vallant. In his community of Frantschach-St. Gertraud, the Kamper Bach and the Fraßbach have become raging rivers that flow into the Lavant. “The entire place, from the community to the kindergarten, an inn, a schoolyard and a police station, was flooded. The flood protection extension on the Lavant, which opened in 2021, has held up, but: “There is also major damage there.” There is talk of a flood lasting forty years.

New projects need to be financed
The flood and avalanche control experts (WLV) were on site last Saturday. Above all, the expansion of the Fraßbach, which has been planned for ten years, must be accelerated. “The project has the highest priority,” says Vallant. The damage to the Kampbach, which flows above Kamp and into the Fraßbach, is also terrible. “Several roads have been destroyed and two bridges have been completely destroyed.”

But the storm did not only cause enormous damage in the municipality of Vallant. The torrential rains also left their mark in the municipality of Wolfsberg. In the area of the Theklagraben, the road was badly damaged and had to be rebuilt. Here too, the damage runs into the millions.

The local leaders of Lavanttal are now at a loss. Due to the financial crisis in the Carinthian communities, the additional costs for repairing storm damage can hardly be covered. They are hoping for support from the state and federal governments.
