Dead trout and salmon trout as far as the eye can see, cellars flooded up to the waist, a mudflow right behind the house: On Wednesday evening, a storm caused catastrophic conditions in Kalwang and Mautern in Styria. The “Krone” was on site during the clean-up work.
Eva Maria Igler stands on the bridge that connects her home to the family trout farm. The Liesing, normally a stream, has grown into a raging brown flood. In Mautern and Kalwang, the first sirens went off at 11 p.m. on Tuesday. “The fire department arrived at one in the morning,” says Igler. “The heart of our farm was under water.”
The centerpiece is the hatcheries for the young trout. They are raised here before being released into the ponds. “I can’t even look inside,” says Igler, unable to hold back his tears.
