60 degrees in the sun! – Life-threatening temperatures in Greece

Date:

A heatwave that has been going on since early July reached a new peak in large parts of Greece on Thursday, with meteorologists warning that temperatures in the sun could rise to more than 60 degrees – which could be fatal, they fear.

Warm air masses have been coming from North Africa for weeks, causing problems for people in large parts of southeastern Europe. Even at night, thermometers in most regions show values above 30 degrees.

With local temperatures expected to exceed 43 degrees Celsius, all archaeological sites in Greece will now be closed between 12:00 local time, the Ministry of Culture announced. Among those affected are Athens’ landmarks, the Acropolis and the ancient site of Olympia.

High risk of fire
Civil protection warned of a high risk of fire in most regions of central and southern Greece. A fire department spokesman was concerned that the smallest fire could develop into a major fire due to the drought and strong winds currently blowing around the Aegean.

The situation is slightly better in Crete and the Aegean islands, where the sea breeze cools things down to around 35 degrees, according to the weather office.

Major work restrictions
The Ministry of Labor has ordered that all delivery services be suspended during the hot afternoon hours (12:00 to 17:00). Construction work was also halted at 12:00 for the next five hours. According to the Ministry of Labor, anyone who can can work from home.

Meteorologists can’t say exactly when this constant heat will end. “Maybe late next week,” they estimate unanimously.
