Shots are fired during an operation on the Evros border river. A Greek police officer is hit. Authorities suspect smugglers fired from Turkish territory.
The incident took place on Saturday night. As announced by the Greek police, officers had been responding to migrants crossing the border illegally when someone suddenly opened fire from Turkey. A border guard was wounded in the stomach and had to undergo surgery at a nearby hospital.
Greek security officials believe smugglers fired the shots, Greek media reporters reported Sunday, citing police sources.
This year, 3,000 migrants have already fled across the border river
Due to the summer drought, smuggling gangs have repeatedly attempted to bring migrants from Turkey to Greece and thence to the EU via the shallow waters of the Evros River. Greece is currently building a fence along this border to prevent illegal crossings. According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), 3,168 people have entered Greece from Turkey via this route since the beginning of the year up to 14 July.
